Suncare Facts

As we make our way into summer we find ourselves rushing to the beach, tanning in our backyards and walking in the sunshine almost every day! To help protect your skin keep these facts in mind.

1. Sunblock and Sunscreen are two different products! Sunscreen contains chemical blockers that protect your skin from the sun by absorbing the rays. They are colorless, but usually leave a film on the skin when applied. Many people have bad reactions to them though, such as irritation, redness and allergic reactions.

Sun block, on the other hand, has physical blockers that repel the sun rays off your skin. They protect againist UVA and UVB rays, but usually are thicker. When applied they can stay visible, but the protection is much better!

2. A wide brim hat can act as a sunscreen! Wearing a hat with a wide brim in the summer is the same as wearing SPF 33 on your face! For people with fair skin that burn even with a sunblock, this can help againist freckles, sun spots and slight burning. Although it helps protect skin, you should always apply a sunblock to your face as well.

3. Sun protectors should be re-applied every 30- 40 minutes! Most of us who go to the beach only apply sunscreen right before we go! The right way to protect your skin is to throw that sunscreen in your beach bag and re- apply every half an hour (Especially if you play a game of beach volleyball or swim!)

4. When should you apply a sunscreen? Most people would think “When I go to the beach” or “On a Hike”; things that take a few hours. The reality? When you plan to be outside for 20 minutes or longer! That could be walking your dog, reading on your porch or watering your plants. Even driving in your car on a sunny day leaves skin vulnerable to the sun’s rays! Not sure if you’re going out or staying inside? Apply some just in case.

5. The sun is responsible for 90% of aging! Sunspots, freckles, hyperpigmentation, sagging, wrinkles… the list goes on and on. Next time you think about skipping the sunscreen just imagine yourself in 30 years and ask yourself what you plan to look like!

Cute Braids for Sunshine

In every magazine this Season, from Cosmo to Seventeen, braids are rocking the pages! Because there are so many styles, versions and ways to create them I wanted to post some of my favorites!

1. The Fishtail Braid This braid has been around forever, but just recently became a huge hit on runways and photo shoots across the world. The reason why I love it? It looks detailed, artistic and creative! You can keep it simple and straight down the back of your head, or make it into a cute side braid. Runway shows are favoring the messy look by making each braid layer a little crooked.

2. French Braided Bangs If you are going to try a new hair style this summer, this is the one! French braiding your bangs creates a sleek, yet feminine look. This can be incorporated into any hair length; from short to long. It’s also a perfect solution to growing out your bangs!

3. Side Braids This is a very classic look and can go well with any outfit; night or day. I use this style multiple times during the day. It’s quick to do in between classes, or at work to keep my long locks out of my face. (Always keep a few hair ties in your purse!) For a messy, softer look- grab the end of the braid after you tie it and shake gently. This will open up the braid slightly and make it appear thicker and longer.

Pastel Colors are now in Trend!

Image

Everywhere you look this season you are sure to find pastel shades! This new color trend can be edgy, feminine or even proffesional when the right colors and shapes are paired together. Here are some reasons why pastel colors ROCK:

1. They make your skin look tanner in the summer! Pastels are a paler- version of our favorite colors. In the summer when you start to get an outside- all- day tan, the pastel colors make your skin glow! They also compliment fair skin shades during any season!

2. Geometric shapes look professional, not childish! Many designers are pairing pastel shades with geometric patterns in their clothing lines. The results? Proffesional, yet feminine pieces that are gorgeous! With any other colors, you would get a more kid- friendly color scheme, but because pastel shades are more subtle the effect is much more grown- up.

3. They make perfect jeans for summer! Probably the most popular use of pastel this season is in jeans. From soft yellow to faded coral, these jeans make a statement without being too flashy. They add a girly- vibe to any wardrobe, while also feeling very relaxed. Most stores like JC Pennys, Macys and Wet Seal have their own versions of them, making them super affordable!

4. They make your nails appear longer! Unlike darker colors like navy, black and purple, pastel nail – polishes create a longer, slimmer effect on nails. To compliment the shades, shape your nails into an oval shape using a nail file. Not only will your nails look cute and feminine, they will be perfect for day or night events!

The cute new Nail Trend!

Image

After seeing all the hype on Sephora.com, as well as other makeup and blog sites, I’ve decided to research this cute nail trend called “Caviar Nails”.

What makes Ciate Caviar nails special? They use a mixture of popular nail colors (Pastel, white, gold) and add a layer of microbeads in complementing colors on top! This gives the nail body, texture and a unique look!

Each kit runs about $25 (That includes 1 nail polish, 1 Jar of microbeads, a tray and a funnel to help collect spilled beads to add back to the jar). If this price seems a little steep, you can always do a DIY version as well! Michelle Phan added a great tutorial to her site to show you how to do it at home.

For the DIY version, just use nail polish you have at home, and buy the Microbeads from Michaels (Craft store). You can get big kits with 10 jars of the microbeads in various colors for only $15!
